It was a really good game. the boys played really well. we should have
been beaten them by 7-8 goals margin but unfortunately, our players were
hitting straight on keepers pads.
We were winning 2-1, but they manage to score at the end of last half.
The boys took the pressure and conceded the goal in the last few minutes
of the game and the final score was 2-2.
Overall, all the boys played well together and played like a
team and support each other. I would like to thanks all the
parents for being supportive.(Khurram Mahmood).

reflects. Herts started strongly with some fine pressure being put onto Essex.
The press worked well and Hannah, Gee and Frankie chased the ball down whilst
Essex tried to switch the ball to get it out of their defence. Norfolk - Lost 4 - 0: After playing so well against Essex, Herts were hopeful of carrying on the good play against Norfolk. Once again Herts was up against a team who had yet to play, so fatigue was always going to be a factor. As it turned out, the whole team worked hard to stop Norfolk and we were unfortunate to concede goals in the first half. They were a strong team, but the game was actually quite well balanced despite the score-line. Early in the second half, Norfolk scored an excellent goal from a short corner which was unstoppable. Herts were rightly disappointed to be 4 down but never gave up. Although very tired, Herts raised their game and dominated for the last 15 minutes, hitting the post and drawing some great saves from the opposition’s keeper. The team displayed immense character and everyone gave their very best. April 22nd Bedford Sports Centre

Lincolnshire - lost 1-4 Chrissie Horn (1) despite having
probably 70% of the play, at least, and 10 or more clear-cut chances to
score. The ball would not go into the net for us and we got caught out by
three very fast breakaways, all of which ended in goals for Lincs. They
held our pressure but we continually failed to find the bit of luck that
would put the ball into the net apart from one clean short-corner strike
from Chrisse.
Bedfordshire - Won 3-0 Victoria Farrant (1), Francesca
Pettengel (2) We played much more effectively in this match with a change
of formation back to our more usual 4:3:3 which strengthened our midfield
and gave us more control in defence. Our distribution improved by being
harder and faster and the ball began to flow from defence to attack as we
piled pressure onto the Beds defence. They had chances and a number of
short corners, but resolute defending paid off and we finished on a high.

Essex - lost 0-4 We failed to get our game flowing against Essex and found
ourselves up against a team who wanted to win the ball and drive through our
defence. We did not win the 50:50 balls and that was our downfall.
Overall, probably a match best put down to experience.
Norfolk - Won 4-2 We turned up for this match, playing hard and driving
forward in wave after wave of attacking play. By half-time when we should
have been at least 6-2 up, we found ourselves 0-2 behind, falling to two
breakaways and have had relentless pressure on their goal. A few words of
encouragement at half-time and we continued to lay strongly, but started
picking out attackers in better positions to score, and turning the pressure
into goals Chrissie Horn played superbly, passing and running alternately,
and deservedly scored 3 of the 4 with Francesca Pettengel picking up the
fourth. Well played girls - a great game, and a real lesson in not getting
frustrated and sticking to the game-plan which worked.

A closely fought contest in which Nina Vinther saved a Penalty Flick and the whole team worked for each other. Scoring first, they then relaxed a little and allowed Cambs to equalise. With the start of the second half, Herts went into overdrive and scored 4 more before Cambs pulled 1 back. Norfolk drew 1 - 1: This was a real humdinger of a game end to end stuff - with first one team in the ascendency and the the other. Norfolk scored first with a very good open play goal from their captain. Herts pulled one back through a Wray short corner. The second saw neither team sdd to their scorers as both teams went of the win. April 29th B Squad - Surrey Friendly - Surbiton HCIn pouring rain, the girls met a very strong Surrey B side and learnt the lessons of being first to the ball and using the width. All depended then on the result between Essex and Norfolk. May 6th Herts - B Squad Friendly - Dame Alice Owen SchoolHerts 1 (Wray) Bedfordshire 0 We had a large squad for our final game of the season so the team had to adjust to a high volume of substitutions. The first half started well with a trade mark Wray goal taken into the D and a powerful hit on target which beat the goalie. However the team flagged and at the half time team talk there was plenty to focus on. They needed to move quick ball, make more leading runs and use the left and right channels better. They also needed to be more competitive as individuals and believe in their own ability. The second half saw much better player to player possession and there were moments of really smart intelligent hockey. Still the goal didn’t come and they had to withstand wave after wave of Bedfordshire attack who were beginning to put the heat on. Beds were unlucky not to score at least once caused by Herts defending errors but we managed to hold out and at the final whistle we had retained our lead. Bedfordshire were gracious in defeat and we had cake and drink to celebrate our end of season successes. On behalf of Jules and Simon, thank you all for your efforts this season. A few players caught my eye, they are good but they can be much better. Girls won 2, lost 2, draw 2. I think its a fair result against some strong sides. I would like to thanks all the parents for being supportive. (Khurram Mahmood) April 29th B Squad - Surrey Friendly - Surbiton HCJust as the B squad coaching team of Jules and Simon thought it couldn't get any wetter, the rains came down even harder as the U13s started their game. Surrey showed a better appetite for the ball than we did, winning most of the 50-50 balls and putting pressure on our receivers very quickly. The 6 U12 girls who had volunteered to play did very well but overall we just didn't have the game sense or power to get ourselves out of trouble. We took too long on free hits giving Surrey the chance to get organised and when we made a break we were too slow. There was a lot of hit the ball anywhere, thus giving back to our opposition. The girls lost 10 - 0 April 29th A Squad - Festival Norfolk - UEAOn a cold and wet day at UEA in Norwich, the Herts girls arrived full of enthusiasm (but not all on time!). The first match was against Beds and an early goalkeeping error by Nelson (her only mistake of the day), when instead of leaving the ball to go out, kicked with very little pace to their centre forward who rounded the keeper and scored. Herts dominated the rest of the game forcing many penalty corners but a well organised defensive routine prevented Herts from scoring until Albery smashed the final one inside the right post dipping just enough to cross the line at backboard height. The second match was against Suffolk and Herts struggled to get into the game. Much of the play was very even but Herts were struggling to find their rhythm and although there were chances and we dominated the possession and territory, Suffolk looked good on the break. We could not score so the result was 0-0. Next game was against Lincs. Slick passing and some good movement off the ball meant we turned round at half-time 3-0 up with two well taken goals by Albery and a back post finish from Radbourne. The manager saw this as an opportunity to rest some of the best players and even with possibly our weakest line up on the pitch we still managed to score two more with a neat finish from Sykes and a slipped short corner well finished by Fadrique. Essex were topping the table when we lined up against them for the fourth game but Herts played some excellent hockeyh. Sanders was great in midfield breaking up play, ghosting past people in midfield and distributing with vision. The back four of Davies, Davies, Calder and Ellis, tackled strongly, carried the ball out of the back well and marked assiduously. Albery looked dangerous on the ball and despite a strong performance we were shading it. The half-time score was 0-0 and with four minutes to go Sanders slipped an inch perfect through ball to Sykes who was stick tackled when through on goal and a penalty stroke was the result. Albery stepped up, gave the manager kittens as it looked like it might go wide but it went in off the inside of the post a perfect stroke. Essex mounted one more strong attack but Nelson was swiftly off her line and went down making a crucial save. 1-0 to Herts. Herts started the next game against Cambes with some slick passing down the right to craet an early chance for Cooper to slip the ball to the penalty spot for the unmarked Fadrique to finish coolly. Cambs never gave up and put Herts under a lot of pressure but the girls defended with great determination. Cambs replied with a scrambled goal in a goalmouth frenzy after Nelson had made a good save. The game was heading for a draw when with a couple of minutes to go we forced a penalty corner. Albery dribbled round the number one runner and coolly finished to make the final score 2-1 to Herts. The final game was against a robust Norfolk team who had already caused a stir amongst opposition coaches for their physical style of play. They bunched well in the middle of the pitch and broke up our neat passing hockey. When we attacked down the right, Sykes looked dangerous but was pushed, barged, elbowed and hacked by opposite number. Herts forced three penalty corners in the second half, or so the manager thought, but the umpire did not agree and the robust defending prevented any clear cut open play chances in the second half. We thought that a draw would not be enough but other results went in our favour and three wins and three draws secured 12 points and the trophy, edging Cambs (11 points) into second and Essex (10 points) into third. The players and the parents were magnificent displaying great team spirit and not giving up when the first two results did not go in our favour.
